What Is a Foldable Piano?
A foldable piano is a compact digital piano whose keyboard section can fold into two or three pieces.
While offering a feel close to a regular digital piano, it becomes compact when stored, making it well suited for carrying around. We actually bring along a foldable piano to use at Sigure’s hands-on demo events.
How Well Foldable Pianos Pair with XR Piano
As long as a foldable piano supports MIDI output, you can connect it to the Meta Quest 3 / 3s with a MIDI cable and use it with Sigure. The basic compatibility requirement is simple.
Connection Requirements
Any foldable piano with a “MIDI OUT” or “USB to HOST” port can be connected. Always check the spec sheet before purchasing to confirm whether the port exists.
Pros and Cons of a Foldable Piano
PRO
Key feel close to a digital piano
Many foldable piano models have a key feel close to a regular digital piano, offering a more authentic practice experience compared to a MIDI keyboard.
PRO
Easy to carry
Folding it down makes it compact, letting you bring a practice environment to places outside your home, like your hometown, a friend’s house, or a hotel.
PRO
Space-saving storage
It can be folded and stored away when not in use, so it doesn’t take up much space even in a small room. You can practice in a style where you only unfold it when you need it.
WATCH OUT FOR
You need to choose a MIDI-compatible model
Some foldable pianos don’t support MIDI output. Always confirm whether a MIDI output port exists before purchasing.
The Cable You’ll Need to Connect
The cable you’ll need depends on the type of port your foldable piano has. The Meta Quest 3 / 3s side uses USB-C.
| Digital Piano Port | Meta Quest 3 / 3s Port | Common Models |
|---|---|---|
| USB Type-B | USB Type-C | Standard type used by Yamaha, Roland, etc. |
| USB Type-C | USB Type-C | Common on relatively newer models |
| USB Micro-B | USB Type-C | Some Casio models, among others |
| Round (5-pin DIN) | USB Type-C | Common on many Yamaha models |
Hands-On Advice from the Sigure Development Team
When running Sigure’s hands-on demo events, we use a foldable digital piano made by TERENCE. Feel free to use it as a reference.
Comparing Foldable Pianos and MIDI Keyboards
| Item | Foldable Piano | MIDI Keyboard |
|---|---|---|
| Key feel | Close to a digital piano | Lighter touch |
| Portability | Compact when folded | Some models fit in a backpack |
| Recommended key count | At least 61 keys, ideally 88 | At least 61 keys, ideally 88 |
| Best suited for | Those who prioritize key feel | Those who want maximum lightness |
KEY POINT
If key feel matters most, a foldable piano is the better fit; if portability comes first, a MIDI keyboard is better suited. Either one can be connected to Sigure as long as it supports MIDI output.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
- Q. Which brand of foldable piano would you recommend?
-
A. We’ve confirmed it works across a variety of brands, including Yamaha, Roland, and Casio, so feel free to choose whichever digital piano you prefer.
Q
- Q. How do I check whether a foldable piano model supports MIDI?
-
A. Check the product’s spec sheet or product page to see whether it lists a “MIDI OUT” or “USB to HOST” port. If no such port is mentioned, it likely doesn’t support MIDI.
Q
- Q. Is a foldable piano still useful if I already have a large digital piano at home?
-
A. Yes. You can practice on your large digital piano at home, and use the foldable piano whenever you need to bring it somewhere. As long as both support MIDI, they can both connect to Sigure.

ABOUT ME
